چکیده

The distribution of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration across coastal waters was characterized based on the compilation of 3510 individual estimates of DOC in coastal waters worldwide. We estimated the DOC concentration in the coastal waters that directly exchange with open ocean waters in two different ways, as the DOC concentration at the edge of the shelf break and as the DOC concentration in coastal waters with salinity close to the average salinity in the open ocean. Using these estimates of DOC concentration in the coastal waters that directly exchangewith open oceanwaters, themean DOC concentration in the open ocean and the estimated volume of water annually exchanged between coastal and open ocean, we estimated a median± SE (and average± SE) global DOC export from coastal to open ocean waters ranging from 4.4± 1.0 PgC yr 1 to 27.0± 1.8 PgC yr 1 (7.0 ± 5.8 PgC yr 1 to 29.0± 8.0 PgC yr ) depending on the global hydrological exchange. These values correspond to a median and mean median (and average) range between 14.7± 3.3 to 90.0± 6.0 (23.3± 19.3 to 96.7 ± 26.7) GgC yr 1 per km of shelf break, which is consistent with the range between 1.4 to 66.1GgCyr 1 per km of shelf break of available regional estimates of DOC export. The estimated global DOC export from coastal to open ocean waters is also consistent with independent estimates of the net metabolic balance of the coastal ocean. The DOC export from the coastal to the open ocean is likely to be a sizeable flux and is likely to be an important term in the carbon budget of the open ocean, potentially providing an important subsidy to support heterotrophic activity in the open ocean.

Cycling of colloidal organic carbon and nitrogen during an estuarine phytoplankton bloom

To establish the influence of phytoplankton blooms on the cycling of dissolved and particulate species of organic carbon and nitrogen, we conducted a field study during a series of blooms in a coastal embayment on Shelter Island, NY. Using cross-flow filtration, we collected highand low-molecular-weight (HMW and LMW) dissolved organic matter (DOM), along with particulate organic matter (POM). T...

Recycling versus export of bioavailable dissolved organic matter in the coastal ocean and efficiency of the continental shelf pump

[1] At least 15% of the 2 Pg y 1 of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) that accumulates in the surface layer of the open ocean has been exported from the ocean margins. The C: N: P stoichiometry of the production and microbial degradation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the coastal ocean conditions the quality of the exported substrates. In this work, DOC, dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and ...

Modeling the dynamics and export of dissolved organic matter in the Northeastern U.S. continental shelf

Continental shelves are believed to play a major role in carbon cycling due to their high productivity. To improve our understanding of carbon dynamics on continental margins, a dissolved organic matter (DOM) model was developed and imbedded within an existing coupled ocean circulation-biogeochemical model of the U.S. East coast. A model simulation with the DOM module was compared with the refe...

Carbon Exchange Among Tropical Coastal Ecosystems

Tropical rivers provide about 60% of the global transport of organic and inorganic carbon from continents to the coastal zone. These inputs combine with organic material from productive mangrove forests, seagrass beds, and coral reefs to make tropical coastal ecosystems important components in the global carbon cycle. Carbon exchange has been measured over multiple spatial scales, ranging from ...

Black Carbon in Estuarine and Coastal Ocean Dissolved Organic Matter

We measured black carbon (BC) in ultrafiltered, high–molecular weight dissolved organic matter (UDOM) in surface waters of Delaware Bay, Chesapeake Bay, and the adjacent Atlantic Ocean (U.S.A.) to investigate the importance of riverine and estuarine dissolved organic matter (DOM) as a source of BC to the ocean. BC was 5– 72% of UDOM-C (27 6 17%), which corresponds to 8.9 6 6.5% of dissolved org...
